Shantel Koberstein doesn't have enough money for diapers, but she's still counting her blessings.
"I told my older son that we were nominated for Holiday Wishes and I asked him what he needed or wanted, and he said, 'Nothing,' " the 38-year-old St. Paul woman said. "He said, 'Mom, I have a good life. I have so many friends who are worse off.' "
Koberstein starts to cry.
"Both my sons are miracle babies; I was told I could never have children," she said. "My second pregnancy was especially a surprise. I didn't know how we were going to make it, emotionally or financially. I was going to school, working, I didn't have a car. We were making it, but we were just making it. I didn't consider abortion, but I did consider adoption. My older son was 12 at the time. He said, 'There is no other option but to keep him. We'll make it work.' When Brayden was born, his big brother cut the umbilical cord and did not take his eyes off him.
"I took him home, but I started to think something was wrong. He'd turn blue when he'd cry, and his extremities were different colors. He took four hours to eat a 4-ounce bottle. He was only in the 20th or 30th percentile for growth. They told me he was fine, but I knew something wasn't right. Then he got a horrible cold - he was not eating, he was listless and gray. It was on a Saturday, so this time, I took him to Children's (Hospital).
"Within 45 minutes, we were in the ICU and the doctors were telling me he needed open-heart surgery
on Monday. I was in shock, but I was also relieved to have a diagnosis. The diagnosis was tetralogy of Fallot (a congenital abnormality involving the structure of the heart). He might need another surgery when he is 5 - he's 2 now.
"He has also been diagnosed with a developmental delay; he has behavioral problems and speech impairments. He receives a lot of therapies now - behavioral therapy at Wilder, early intervention from the St. Paul schools, speech therapy....Lots of people (therapists) come to our home, but we go out to them, too.
"With all the therapies, it makes it hard to work right now. I ended up losing my job in retail because of all the time I had to take off for the surgery. I also don't think Brayden is ready for a regular day care right now. A friend of mine might be able to watch him, which would help, because I really need a job. I would like to go back to school to finish up my nail technician certification.
"For now, I get by. Laundry, soap, gas - everything costs so much. There is nothing left over. It's extremely stressful. I hate it. I just want to work again. I had to go and ask for help buying diapers. We go through them so fast. Is it silly to put a potty chair on my list of Holiday Wishes? I could also use a carpet cleaner. The roof of our apartment building started leaking, and the ceiling got moldy. I scraped the ceiling, but I could use a steam cleaner for the carpet.
"This year, I'll be making gifts for people - ornaments or wreaths. It's OK. Christmas is not really about the things. Christmas is mostly a feeling."
