Michael BOELTER

Relevant quotes from Chapter XXVI of "THE TRAGEDY OF MINNESOTA" Page 2 from THE ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY OF PIONEER LIFE
Online at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/colonial/pioneer/index.html
On Friday Mrs. Boelter ventured to the house of her brother-in-law. She was shocked to discover his mother lying on the floor, her head severed from her body, the house plundered, and the furniture and bedding strewn around the yard in wild confusion. In one corner of the yard lay the corpses of five children. Without losing her presence of mind, Mrs. Boelter ran into the garden, hastily dug up some potatoes with her fingers, gathered some cucumbers, and hurried back to her children in the woods.
This indicates that at lease 5 of Michaels children were killed.  Other portions of the account indicate that his father died and the account by Minnie Buce Carrigan indicates that his mother died also.

As per research by Imgard Hensel from Lutheran records for Lautenburg.
4. Ludwig Christoph Koberstein, born 22 Apr 1843, chr. 1 May 1843 in Larz, son of Colonist Ludwig Koberstein and Caroline, widowed Wendland.  Couldn't read witnesses.
This is odd since my information has his name as Gottlieb but with the same birth date, chr. date and place.

Per Phone call with Virgil Koberstein the oldest child of Herman he remembered these other children:  Lydia, Sarah, Edna, Laura, and John which are not in the cencus above.  The cencus also listed Gotlib as a daughter, this could be one that Virgil didn't remember or a nick name was used for her in as much as her first name is the same as her father.  In this same phone call he indicated that Gotlib was born in Germany (Prussia in the cencus) and came to the U.S. when very young (the same as my Louis Koberstein Jr.).  He also remembered that
Gotlib's father was buried in Kenyon, Mn the same place as this cencus.  He will check this out and call me back.  Virgil also gave me all the decendants that he could remember.  These are entered in this database.

Goodhue County Heritage by Harold Severson, 1963
The Gottlieb Koberstein family lived near Kenyon and for many years had been faithful members of the East Prairie Church.  Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein were the parents of 10 children who were talented musicians and singers.  They formed what became known as the Koberstein choir and became quite an attraction wherever they sang.
With the Koberstein family as a nucleus, the young people started a "Jungent Bund' which later grew into the Young People's Alliance and then into the Evangelical League of Christian Endeavor.  It is now known as the Youth Fellowship.

During the second half of the 19th century there were two routes one could take in going to the new world. The direct route would take an emigrant directly from the port they were leaving from to America. The ship would often stop in other ports along the way for additional supplies and passengers, but the emigrants would not debark but would continue on the same ship all the way to America.

On the other hand, emigrants taking an indirect route would be only taking the Hamburg ship for part of the trip and there would be a transfer to another shipping line for subsequent sections of the journey. The most common indirect route was from Hamburg to Hull, England. Emigrants would then take a train across England to Liverpool, London, Southampton, or another port (most went to Liverpool) and continue they journey to the New World from there.

Per letter dated Sept. 28, 1998 from Barbara Herschberger (Librarian at Ivanhoe public library) she  indicates that the family listed in the 1880 Cencus (for which she sent the information also) was not listed in the 1885 State cencus. Furthermore Louis Koberstien was on the tax role for 1882 in the township of  Shaokatan but not for 1883.  Therefore he must have moved.

Caroline Auguste Wilhemina HOFFMANN

1900 U.S. Cencus (see husband for full details).  Gives birth data as Nov 1852.

1900 U.S. Cencus for Fred Koberstein (with Satterlee family) gave Mothers birthplace as well as his as Maryland.  The two cencus data are at odds on this.  Other information indicates Caroline came to U.S. when three years old.

Hill Cemetary in Gaston, Quoted in 30 AUG 1976 letter from G. Balfour gives birth date as 1953 and death year as 1924.

Kirchenbuch, 1826-1774 (Obersitzko) Microfilm # 1194740 Item 3, p129 #82 gave name as Caroline Auguste Hoffmann.

According to Meyers gazetteer...

Obersitzko (prev. 'Obrzycko'), city of 1746 residents on the Warthe river, Kreis Samter, Posen.  It had its own: Civil reg. office; Catholic, Protestant and Jewish houses of worship; pool; hospital, gasworks; bank; cattle and general goods markets; grain dealer; cement products factory; distillery and mill.  Obersitzko was also the name of the surrounding 'estate district' which comprised various Vorwerks, foresty offices, estates and noble's estates totalling 1129 persons.

Hope this helps,

Dear Suzanne,

I was in Poland last year just north of Obersitzko.  I have traced my family back to Obersitzko now but at the time I did not know it.  However, I have recieved pictures and a short history of Obersitzko from my guide who went there after I left.  His brief history is as follows:

The earliest known mention about this place goes back to 1238, when a
castellany is marked (means an area ruled by a nobleman - the king's deputy called the "Castellan" lived in the closest castle)

In the 15th century Obertsitzko is invested with city rights.

In the 16th century the city collapsed due to the destruction of Swedish invaders, robbery and pestilence.

In 1636 the city recovers, and new civic law is invested.

in 1650 a new city hall is built.  At that time clothmakers from Germany arrived and settled.  Oberstizko becomes a prosperous fabric center of the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1934 the city is deprived of civic rights because of it does not have the population required by law.

Since 1990 the civic rights are invested in the city again.

My guide also sent pictures of Obersitzko and mentioned that the Roman Catholic Church which is still standing was built in 1724-28 and was designed by famous Italian architect, Pompeo Ferrari.  The Lutheran church is also still standing although apparently not in use.  It was built in 1795.

As to records....We are fortunate that the LDS library has a nearly complete set of films for Catholic, Protestant and civil records.  If you have web access you can look them up at www.familysearch.org which is the LDS website.  I have listed a few below for you.

Film # 0747352   Civil Transcripts and Protestant parish records
   Baptism, marriage and death 1844-51, 1854-55, 1857-1865
Film # 1191375   Items 6-21   Civil Transcripts and Protestant parish
records
    Marriage and death 1866
   Baptism, Marriage and death 1867-68
   Marriage and death 1869
   Baptism, marriage and death 1870
   Baptism and death 1871-72

Film # 1191376   Items 1-4   Civil Transcripts and Protestant parish records
   Marriage and death 1872-73

The Protestant films go all the way back to 1737.  I will be looking at 0747352 and earlier films tonight so I will keep my eye out for your names.  I believe that another Posen Lister, Terry Koberstein, has Hoffmann family in Obersitzko and Grunberg so maybe you two can find a connection.

I will pass along anything I find on the history of the area etc.  If you email me privately with your snail mail address I will send you color copies of the pictures I have of Obersitzko.

All the best,
Paul Wolter

I have two sources of information on the protestant church building in Oberstizko, (Obrzycko, Poland) which I saw on a trip last May.  I have had one of the descriptions translated and I include both versions below for those interested.  The second description I have only in German it was written a little later than the first and says something about a new church.  I would like anyone's opinion as to whether this implies the old church was no more or was this another building.  If you would like to see a picture of what I think is the old building please go to my website at www.krenzgenealogy.homestead.com  where you will find it on the opening page.

"Geschichte der evangelischen Parochien in der Provinz Posen" 1904
Obersitzko

**First Description in English**

Oberstizko

In December of the same year, 1739, the wood that had been worked in the forest for the congregation's new church was already gathered on the building site when there came an unexpected and arbitrary order from the estate's lord, saying that either the church would
have to stand there completed within 24 hours, or it would never be allowed to be built. The congregation did not loose their courage, all the members set their hand to the work, and they really did succeed in erecting the building within 24 hours, and covering the frame and the roof with boards. With a great raising of their spirits, the congregation was able to celebrate Christmas Eve in their own church. This church, built in a single day, is still standing today, a memorial to the strength of our ancestors' faith. However now it has brick [or stone?] walls, it is covered with tiles, and since 1775 it has a tower, for which the parliament in Warsaw gave their permission.

The congregation was to face even harder tests. Around the middle of the eighteenth century Obersitzko was owned by a Mr. von Raczynski.  On the 28th August 1746 he found himself among wild companions. He bet the Protestant church in a card game, and lost it. He could do
this because it stood on his land and ground. The winner was Wladeslaw von Bonnikowski, a former Protestant who had converted to Catholicism.  The new owner closed the church that very day, and forbade all church services in the building. He said that through these events God and the Holy Virgin had shown their dissaproval of the religious dissidents.

Reverend Johann Rosenau was forced to leave the congregation. The congregation got back its property by the law of 1768 which granted tolerance to dissidents. At Easter 1768 services could start again in the same church which the congregation had been deprived of for 22 years and now they lasted without interruption.  At the time Samter and Wronke joined this parish and remained united until they received their own parish priests in 1779 and 1787 resp.  In 1838 the congregation was enabled to build a massive two-storeyed parish office by an act of mercy of King Frederick William III; King Frederick William IV granted a major part of the financial means to purchase an organ.  In 1874 a new parish office was built.  Today the parish consists of 22 villages with 2541 inhabitants including the town of Obersitzko, among them Grnberg, Stobnica, Stobnica Hauland, Podlesie, Jarischewo.

77. Elford Leonard KOBERSTEIN

Also on the postcard of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota the note on the back referenced an Uncle Alford.

Newspaper Article (no reference given) sent from Mrs. Cindy Broderick of Kasota, MN on January 15, 2002 with pictures of Else Tews Koberstein and Hazel Koberstein.

"W. A. Koberstein Early Pioneer Summoned at 91

and an adjacent article
"Brothers Never Met During a Lifetime
A renunion of two brothers who had not seen each other during an entire lifetime came about yesterday - two days after the older brother had died.
Elford L. Koberstein, 73, Portland, Oregon, arrived in sleepy Eye on the 11 o'clock bus yesterday morning not knowing that his brother, William, 91, Prairieville township, whom he had never seen had passed away Saturday morning.
Told that his brother had died, Elford got to the Schwartz funeral home in time to see the elder Koberstein in death and to attend funeral services that afternoon.
William was born in Wisconsin 91 years ago.  He left home before the family moved to Elkton Brookings county, South Dakota, where Elford was born December 12, 1885.  At the age of five Elford moved to Portland, Oregon, with his family.  He still lives there and is employed as a deputy sheriff.
Last week the Kobersteins wrote Elford, telling him his brother was failing.  He decided to make the trip to Sleepy Eye, traveling by train as far as the Twin Cities, then boarding the bus for this city Monday forenoon.  When he made inquery as to the location of the Koberstein farm he learned his brother had died.
All through the years the brothers had exchanged letters and greeting cards, but somehow had never managed a get-together."

Per letter from Judith E. Goldmann of 32455 Padgett Road, Hillsboro, Oregon (503-648-9597, judy_goldmann@pmug.org) dated January 20, 199 documenting research she did for me.

Leon A. Koberstein is listed with his parents in the 1900 census for Washington county, Oregon, born Oct 1885.  He does not appear in Washington county records.  Is he the E. L. listed in his mother obit in 1924?  In 1900 Caroline Hoffman Koberstein stated that she had born 8 children; five were living.  Her obit in 1924 mentioned that she had four sons surviving.

17. Caroline KOBERSTEIN

BIOGRAPHY: Godparents - Martin Koberstein, Caroline Koberstein, Ewald Warnke

Rational for separating the two families of Müller and Mueller married to a C(K)aroline Koberstein

First of all I apprently when I first came across the Müller/Mueller fathers got them mixed up and concanotated their first name of both Wilhelm and gottlieb (with Albrecht mixed in on the marriage record of one).  It became clear that they are two people and the names were kept single first names.  Further more it became clear the spelling of Müller/Mueller mattered.  Sometimes Mueller is a easy spell for Müller if you don't have easy access to the umlaut key on a computer, so that accounts for the error.  So now I have:

Albrecht Gottlieb Müller (AQ=7259, FS=L2TL-GSM) married to Caroline Koberstein (AQ=5749, FS=M1QX-ZY8) (whose parents are Gottlieb Koberstein and Justine Warnke) with the children of Emma Mathilde born 6 Aug 1876, Erich Albert born 31 Mar 1881, and Richard Reinhold born 4 May 1884.  The church birth record for the last two show Caroline spelled as Karoline.  For right now I have to assume it is just a spelling variation, but time will tell.  I also have a child named Hedwig Ida birth in AQ/FS listed 1885 but no more data or source documents.  I don't know if she is real or not now.

Wilhelm Mueller (AQ=5766, FS=LR5H-XK7) married to Caroline Koberstein (AQ=5724, FS=M1QX-83C) (whose parents are Johann Friedrich Gottfried Koberstein and Wilhelmine König) with the children of Caroline Bertha born 11 Mar 1870 and Auguste Mueller born 24 Aug 18734.  In the birth documents the mother of the first child is spelled Caroline and the mother of the second child is spelled as Karoline.  I don't know why at this time.

80. Erig Albert MÜLLER

BIOGRAPHY: Godparents - Warnke, Richten

BIRTH: Also shown as Born Colonie Brinsk, Strasburg, West Prussia.

81. Richard Reinhold MÜLLER

BIOGRAPHY: Godparents - Eduard Gallisch, Justine Koberstein

Used this Caroline because godmother is Justine Koberstein, Caroline's probable real mother.  On second thought this wouldn't work, so it must be the caroline daughter of Johann.  So he is moved to the second Caroline middle name Justine.  It is curious that Johann had three first name Caroline daughters.  The first appears to not have a middle name and may have died in infancy, although I don't have a death record.  The second Caroline has middle name Wilhelmine and the third Caroline has middle name Justine which must have been enough to justify them having the same first name.

SURNAME: Also shown as Muller

BIRTH: Also shown as Born Colonie Brinsk, Strasburg, West Prussia.

18. Henriette KOBERSTEIN

BIOGRAPHY: Godparents - Ewald Warnke, Maria Knoll

The relationship of Heinriette the daughter of Gottlieb and Heinriette the mother of these chilren is an assumption bases on appropriate age and location in Colonie Brisk, it is not a proven genealogical fact.

Further the apparent unmarried condition of Heinriette with these children is not understood and needs more research to clarify.

20. Johann Gottlieb KOBERSTEIN

BIOGRAPHY: Godparents - Adam Warnke, Justine Wendland

It is suspected this may be a second marriage for Gottlieb.  Note that the proposed first wife, Justine would have been 41, assuming first birth at 20 years old, at birth of last child.  There is no overlap of births of last child of Justine and first child of Anna Maser.  In fact there is a gap of 25 years.  However this would make Gottlieb 67 at the birth of the 4th child of Anna Maser, possible but improbable.  In fact that huge gap of 25 years and age of 67 makes it highly improbable, so now I must search for another Gottlieb as there is no record for another Gottlieb in these records books.

Death record states father as Gottlieb, I guess this means that the Godparent and grandfather Gottlieb acted as father, maybe even adopted after the death of the father.  However I have no record of his death, but it is odd that his fourth child is listed with last name of Limski (Mothers maiden name) but with the notation of alias Koberstein.  All in all an intersting situation that will have to be firgured out.

E-mail dated 10/25/2000
Terry,

I have dug out a letter I had received from Jean Pierce in which she had listed the info I sent to you, but it looks like I goofed and got on a wrong line.  Ernestine Wilhelmina Fabert was born 5 Dec 1855 at Zachsburg, married 1874 to Gustav J. Zlomke and died 17 Dec. 1936.  Ameilia Sophia Fabert was born 5 March 1860 Marquette Co., WI, married 29 March 1878 to William Koberstein and died 7 Nov 1905 at Packwaukee, WI.  Sorry about the confusion and glad you caught it.

I also found info now regarding Anna Elizabeth Koberstein
   b.  8 Jan 1897 Packwaukee, WI  (from family group sheet from J. Pierce)
  m. 10 Dec 1910  (this info from Hugo Berger's obit - Anna would only have
been   `      13??)  (also from family group sheet from J. Pierce)
  d.  5 Sept 1965 burial at Bonnet Prairie Cemetery, Rio, WI (from J. Pierce)

Also, in the body of the letter referred to above, Jean had this to say:

"I'll try to sort our the Fabert info for you.  My Grandma Berger - Anna's mother was Amelia Fabert married to William Kobestein (spelling?) March 29, 1878 at Harrisville, WI.  Amelia died Nov 7, 1905 and is burried at the Town of Lawrence Cemetery near Westfield.  Wm died 31 Oct 1934 and is buried there also.  However, the tombstone says Kobstin - not Koberstein.  It's really a pretty cemetery - on a hill overlooking a small lake.  I've been there several times."    Hope this helps as it's all I have.

Now, a question for you - do you have an e-m address for A. Berger?  I saw a posting for that person but have never been able to contact.  Perhaps an e-m address change following the posting I saw as my mail comes back undelivered.

As I think I've mentioned, Jean doesn't have e-m.  I took the liberty of making copies of a couple pages from your web site and am mailing those to her this morning.

First name hard to read, will take more work to decipher.  This now makes the three Caroline daughters of Johann each have a separate name.

Wilhelm MUELLER

If Emma Mathilde belongs to this relationship then the Father must have another first names of Gottlieb, which is in the Brinsk record, therefore I put it as a middle name.  I justified this because the child is in the correct date order and Caroline geb. Koberstein is the correct mothers name.
