"Smart" Polymer Surfaces:
Surface-Active Selective Adhesion Promoters
Surface-active additives generally decrease the adhesive properties of a polymer. With proper molecular design, however, a surface-active additive can be used to deliver functional groups to surfaces. End-functional block copolymers are effective for this purpose and impart selective adhesion character to polymeric substrates. An important aspect of this research is the study of how surfaces reorganize when their environment is switched from hydrophobic to hydrophilic.Novel Biomaterial Surfaces with Bioinductive Character
Methods are under development for the decoration of biomaterial substances with a variety of bioinductive substances that promote cell adhesion and promote cell proliferation. These novel materials are not only biocompatible -- they also promote specific biological events to occur. Patterned model substrates are utilized to study fundamental interactions between cells and biomaterial surfaces. Specific projects involve the fabrication of biosensor coatings that promote the growth of capillaries, and polyethylene implants that promote bone formation.Room Temperature Fabrication of Ultrathin Silicon Oxide Films
Ultrathin silicon oxide films are useful as oxygen barriers, fillers, membranes, and insulators for microelectronics. A new process has been developed for creating high energy silicon oxide films from low energy siloxane precursor films. Precursor films can be applied to virtually any inorganic or polymeric substrate. This approach is being applied to produce the next generation of durable aircraft coatings, gas separation membranes, and scratch-resistant polymer coatings.Functional Polymers
End-and-Center functional polymers are synthesized and studied as model systems for functional surfaces. They also constitute a practical means of controlling surface and interfacial properties of polymers. A combination of careful synthesis, theory, and experiment is used to develop molecular design criteria for these useful additives.
Farmer, Marion R. (Nee Schmitt) Passed away peacefully on November 14, 2008, at age 84. Beloved wife of Dr. Silas G. Farmer for 62 years. Loving mother of Susan Borth, Linda (Dr. Jeffrey Koberstein) Farmer of Connecticut, and Richard (Cate) Farmer of Florida. Proud grandmother of Meghan (Adam) Silliman of Connecticut, Alicia (Paul Szori) Borth of Janesville, WI, Nick (Kristin) Koberstein of Connecticut, Laura Borth of Pewaukee, WI, Isabella, Miah and Christian Farmer of Florida. Great-grandmother of Brock and Cole Silliman of Connecticut. Sister of Henry (Melva) Schmitt of Minoqua, WI. Also loved by other family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents Henry L. and Elydia M. W. Schmitt. Marion was a member of Faith United Church of Christ where she was the Church Council Secretary and chaired on the Board of Worship and Board of Deacons. She was also a choir member for 65 years. She was a member of the Northwest Milwaukee Womans Club, serving 2 terms as President, 6 years as Editor, and 10 years as a Board member. She also was a member of the Better TV & Film Council and the District Federation of Women's Clubs. Marion was a Voting Inspector for Milwaukee for 50 years.
