129. Mary Beth KOBERSTEIN

Koberstein appointed to Planning Commission

July 15, 2015 7:46 am  •  By Jesse Duarte(1) Comments
A St. Helena newcomer with a background in city planning and real estate law is the newest member of the city’s Planning Commission.

Mary Koberstein was appointed Tuesday by Mayor Alan Galbraith, with the consent of the rest of the council, to replace Matthew Heil, who resigned for personal reasons.

Koberstein, who moved to St. Helena last September, earned a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin in 1977. She worked as a planner at the county and city levels in Illinois, where she was involved in land use, building and zoning issues. She also oversaw a major revision of the zoning ordinance for Wilmette, Illinois, and served on the Zoning Board of Appeals in Evanston, Ill.

After earning a law degree at Northwestern University Law School in 1991, Koberstein practiced law in Chicago, where she specialized in land use, zoning and real estate law. She also served as general counsel to a real estate development firm.

Given her background, Koberstein told the council she hopes to make a “meaningful, perhaps unique contribution” to the St. Helena Planning Commission.

From what I know my father's parents had seven boys (including my dad) all of which were born in and around
Milwaukee, WI. Most of my relatives still live back east. Although now my family is located in Idaho, Oregon, and Illinois. I remember as a child traveling up and around the Green Bay area where my fathers parents had a cabin and owned alot of land. At this time I am still trying to obtain information about the exact location of the property and how much we still own. Both of my dad's parents have died and I believe the land is still own by the Koberstein Family.  Most of my relatives have been buried in WI. at a family plot which dated way back into the early 1800's. I think the cemetary was call "Holy Hill", but again I am still trying to obtain its exact location in WI. I do remember as a young child visiting this cemetary that contained HUGE monuments that marked the royalty of some family members. I think the cemetary was a Catholic cemetary, because I vaguely rememeber visiting the grave sites and placing flowers there AFTER we had attended Mass.   What information do I need to retrieve for the benefit of adding this to our web site? Please advise me with any helpful advise that you can supply.  Thanks for your help.  Joan Koberstein-Mortensen Meridian, Idaho

Comments: As a teenager Audie Murphy was my favorite actor - especially the westerns. I loved his soft spoken manner - being born in Texas myself, I never noticed that he had a Texas drawl.

I was browsing for DVDs to purchase when I found the Memorial Site for Audie and will be purchasing DVDs online. I did luck out and found To Hell and Back at a local Variety Store - and have watched it twice.
