In trying to resolve the Friedrick Ludwig Koberstein family and the Berlin Address Book Records for F. Koberstein that seem to be one and the same person. Here is a list of the family as found (connected) on the IGI.

Friedrich Ludwig KOBERSTEIN.

Friedrich married Dorothee Elisabeth LUTHER.

They had the following children:

1 M Friedrich Wilhelm KOBERSTEIN was christened 22 Aug 1847 in Sophien, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen.

2 M Franz Albert KOBERSTEIN was christened 22 Apr 1849 in Sophien, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen.

3 M Friedrich Oscar KOBERSTEIN was christened 6 Jul 1851 in Sankt Georgen, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen.

4 M Hermann Carl KOBERSTEIN was christened 17 Jan 1858 in Sankt Georgen, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen.

5 F Anna Margarethe KOBERSTEIN was christened 26 Dec 1859 in Sankt Georgen, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen

From this record we can deduce that the family lived in an area of Berlin that was part of the Sophien Parish till sometime after their second child Franz Albert Koberstein was christened on April 22, 1849. Some time before their third child, Friedrick Oscar Koberstein was christened on July 6 1851 they were now in the Sankt Georgen Parish jurisdiction. This all assumes that the people of the time held to jurisdictional boundaries of the parishes. This is certainly not true in modern United States churches but we must assume it was true in Berlin during these years for any deduction to be made using this as a clue.

Now during this time frame the Berlin Address Books lists a F. Koberstein. In general the early books of this time frame only gave the initial of the head of household (assumed). From this we get:

1849: Koberstein, F., Bictualienhändler, Platz a. Neuen Thor 3.

1851: Koberstein, F, Handelsmann, Grosse FrankfurterStr. 67.

1855: Koberstein, F., Handelsmann, Gr. FrankfurterStr. 67.

1856: Koberstein, F., Handelsmann, Grosse FrankfurterStr. 67.

1857: Koberstein, F., Handelsmann, Grosse FrankfurterStr. 67.

1859: Koberstein, F., Handelsmann, Grosse FrankfurterStr. 67.

1860: Koberstein, F. K., Handelsmann, Gr.(osse) FrankfurterStr. 67.

The word after the name is their occupation. In 1849 this F. Koberstein was Bictualienhädler, at this time it has not been determined what occupation this is. He was living at Platz a Neuen Thor 3. However by 1851 he had moved to Grosse Frankfurterstr. 67. and had a new job as a Handelmann, which by translation is a Tradesman. He probably moved because of the job change and it appears as a consequence was in a new parish jurisdiction because his next child christened was in a new church (Sankt Georgen). It is interesting to note that Grosse Franfurterstr. had its name changed to Stalin-Allee, then to Karl-Marx-Allee, which is its name in modern times. In order to determine Parish jurisdictions I have used an excellent web site:

http://www.progenealogists.com/germany/streetguides.html

This web site covers the jurisdiction for specific year only. They are 1874, 1881, 1888, 1900, 1910, and 1917. It is important to take this into account when deducing the parish any person lived in for a given year. The information on this web site does not give a parish jurisdiction for Platz a Neuen Thor 3. I can only assume that it is in the Sophien Parish, because his first two children were christened there. However, for Grosse Frankfurterstr. 67. it gives Markus in the year 1874 and all following years. This is a problem as the listing we have for F. Koberstein are 1851 to 1860. You can resolve this by taking advantage of another section of this web site that gives the dates that new parish churches were inaugurated. I compiled this hierarchy of parishes for all parishes that had Koberstein families listed.

From this you can see that the Markus Parish was formed from the Georgen Parish in 1854. In any case it is clear that they would have been in the Georgen Parish while living at Grosse Frankfurterstr. 67. when their third child was born and consequently he was christened in the Geogen Parish. Now, one can wonder why his children born after Markus was formed in 1854 were christened in the Georgen Parish, but the only record I have from the web site is that their address was clearly in Markus in 1874. Thus the records are silent on this quandry. Perhaps the boundries changed a little between the time the Markus Parish started in 1854 and 1874 when the record makes its statement.

The Berlin Address Book records continue with a F. Koberstein with the same profession of Handelsm. but living at Grüner Weg 29. in 1861. It seems apparent that he moved again. If he had any more children (he would have been about 32 (assuming his first child was born when he was 20 and could had have more) they would have been living at Grüner Weg 29. which is in the Andreas Parish in 1874. Since the Andreas Parish was formed from the Georgen in 1854 and further church ordinances performed would have been done there. The ** above indicates the some or all records for Andreas have been extracted. This means they would be in the IGI. Due to the absence of any Koberstein listing in the IGI from the Andreas Parish I suspect he did not have any more children or 'some' is the operative word in this case. A F. Koberstein is at the Grüner Weg 29. address through 1864. The address book records seem to suggest that he had another career change and move.

1865: Koberstein, F., Nachtwächter, Verlängerte Kleine MarkusStrasse im hohendorfschen Hause.

The profession is Nachtwächter, which is translated to Night watcher. He lived in extended Kleine MarkusStrasse in "hohendorfschen" house. I don't have the translation to "hohendorfschen" at this point but it appear that if you extend the street you will see his house. Since there is no house number I can only determine that it would be in either the Markus or Andreas Parish in 1874. Nevertheless the address books continue:

1867: Koberstein, F., Nachtwächter, Kleine AndreasStr. 20.

1868: Koberstein, F., Nachtwächter, Kleine AndreasStr. 20.

1870: Koberstein, F., Nachtwächter, Kleine AndreasStr. 20.

and then it gives:

F, Stadtnachtwächter, InvalidenStr. 142. III.

which continues till 1882. In 1865 he started the profession of night watchman moving from Kleine Markus Strasse after one year to Kleine AndreasStr. 20. eventually changed to working for the Stadt (City) doing the same thing up to 1882. At this time he would be 55 years old using the assumption as above.
