FRANK W. KOBERSTEIN
Frank W. Koberstein was born July 5, 1877, in Germany about 50 miles north of Berlin. He was the third child of 10 children born to Henry W. and Amelia Werfel Koberstein. He came to the USA by ship in 1880 along with his parents and three other children. They were six weeks on the water. There were also cattle and a lot of other immigrants on the same ship. They landed at Ellis Island, NY where they were processed. They then went to Iowa for a year where his father got a job helping an outfit thrash watermelons. They
could eat all the watermelons they wanted as long as they gave all the seeds back. From there they went to Hastings, NE where his father worked in a brick yard making bricks. They moved to a farm a few years later. Frank started farming on his own, where he batched for a few years until he met and married the school teacher.
Frank and Clara E. Foy were married March 10, 1909. They continued to live on this place and farm until buying the place 4 north and 4 miles west of Holyoke in 1916 and moving there in the spring of 1918. They loaded their belongings in two box cars and immigrated to Holyoke. Dan McGowan immigrated on the same train. The McGowans lived 4 north and 2 1/2 miles west of Holyoke. Frank came with the stock and other things. He also brought his dog. Clara and the four children stayed with relatives and came later on the passenger train to Holyoke where Frank met them with a team and carriage.
At that time they could go one-half mile east from the place and angle across country to Holyoke, There were few fences. Most was open range. Some of their close neighbors were Morris Brees, Munce Hitt, Gust Richardson, and Agnes Arnes families. They were never too busy to stop what they were doing and go help someone sick or in need of help.
Frank and Clara had eight children, the first one died in infancy. The rest of the children, Floyd, Winona, Roy, Faye, L. Frank, Ray, and Emily attended Silver Beam School 2 1/2 miles south of where they lived. At one time there were 37 pupils attending with one teacher. They usually had two or three programs a year, especially one at Christmas time. They also attended high school in Holyoke. There were a lot of good times along with the bad.
Frank and Clara bought a home in Holyoke at 627 S. Phelan and moved into it in the fall of 1945, where they continued to make their home. Frank liked to work in the garden and Clara with her flowers and also her clubs. Clara passed away April 30, 1959, and Frank continued to live at this address until he passed away on April 25, 1966. Both of them were laid to rest in Holyoke Memorial Park. - by Roy A. KobersteinFRANK WILLIAM KOBERSTEIN

F.W. KOBERSTEIN DIES; RITES TODAY
Frank W. Koberstein, 88, well known resident of the Holyoke community for 47 years, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, at his home here. He had been active until a short time before his death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, April 28, at the Holyoke Methodist church, with Rev. Gerald Dingman officiating, and interment will be at Holyoke Memorial Park. Arrangements are in charge of the Lewis Funeral Home.
The third eldest child in a family of 10 children of Amelia Werfel and Henry Koberstein, Frank William Koberstein was born July 5, 1877, near Berlin, Germany. In 1881 he emigrated with his parents to America. They first lived in Illinois but soon settled near Hastings, Nebraska where Mr. Koberstein attended school and grew to manhood.
It was there that he met his wife, Clara Foy, who was teaching school near his farm. They were united in marriage at Edgar, Nebraska, on March 10, 1909, at the home of the bride's parents. They continued to make their home four miles north of Hastings until March 1919, when they moved to Colorado by immigrant cars and established their home on the farm eight miles northwest of Holyoke which they had purchased two years earlier. Here they farmed and made their home until 1945 when their sons returned from military service to resume the farming. At that time Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein purchased a residence in Holyoke, at 627 South Phelan Avenue, and this continued to be their home since that time.
Mr. Koberstein was baptized into the Lutheran faith as a child and was a charter member of Grace Lutheran church in Holyoke while it was in existence. In 1949, Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein placed their membership in the First Methodist church and remained faithful members until their death. Mr. Koberstein attended church the day before he passed away.
He enjoyed gardening as a hobby. He spaded the soil Saturday and planned to make his first planting of sweet corn this week.
Mrs. Koberstein passed away April 30, 1959, six weeks after she and Mr. Koberstein had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Seven of their eight children are living, their first son having died at birth. Twelve grandsons, one granddaughter, three daughters-in-law, four sons-in-law, and two of Mr. Koberstein's sisters, Mrs. Ida Garfield, Manhattan, Kansas, and Mrs. Millie Tjaden, Hastings, Nebraska, also survive.
The children and their husbands or wives are all here to attend the funeral. The children are: Floyd Koberstein, Pomeroy, Washington, Winona, Mrs. Glen Rouze, Holyoke; Roy A. Koberstein, Holyoke; Faye, Mrs. W.A. Dulgar, Sacramento, California; Lee Frank Koberstein, Pullman, Washington; Ray W. I found your research on Ralph E. Koberstein which is different from the data I have on a Ralph E. Koberstein. You have him born January 15, 1912 in Nebraska and died February 22, 1978 in Denver Colorado. Married to Nancy Lee Cassai born January 2, 1916 and died June 7, 1998 in Denver, CO.
I have this name born Dcecember 29, 1911 in Nebraska but death on June 8, 2001 in Massachusetts. Married to Margaret F. Abbott who died March 20, 2005 also in Massachusetts. They had a child Ada Mae Koberstein. His father was Otto Herman Koberstein.
I suspect your information is more correct. What do you think. Thanks for and clarification you can give.

Received e-mail dated May 13, 2003 as follows:
"Terry
Hello! We briefly spoke our email a couple of years ago. I think I never followed up with you after your email.
My grandfather is Herman Koberstein, #19, but I think there is some strange information that follows his name. The picture is absolutely correct but my grandfather, who is the son of Ernst Wilhelm, from his second wife, Paulina Hoffman, was named Herman Wilhelm Koberstein. Herman married his first wife, Margaret, and they adopted Ralph Koberstein. When Margaret died or divorced Herman (not sure), he later married Leora and they had a son Terrell L. Koberstein, my father. Terry married Bette Ann Pray and had 2 children, Amy Lynn and Stacey Leigh. We know both have children of our own as well.
Ralph also married and had a daughter who had 2 children.
I am not sure who Esther Koberstein is, as she is listed as Ralph's sister. I will have to speak to my dad but he has only ever stated that he had a half brother, Ralph. Also I have never heard my grandfather Herman called Harry O. I can check on this as well.
By the way, the web site looks great and thanks for the information. I will send information from my father as he knows more of the dates.
If you are to reply to this email, please use curtisandstacey@ev1.net as I will be on maternity leave for the next couple of months. Thanks
