"Terry Koberstein... I just received your E-mail.  I got the information re: Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein directly from his naturalization petition.  I checked again very carefully.  It states that he was born in Lansberg, Germany.  His wife, Paulina Antonia Huffman, was also born in Lansberg.  (from her naturalization petition)  It states the ship she came on was the Helman, port of
Baltimore on November 5, 1880.  The resaon I mentioned Berlin is becasue as a child I would ask "Where was grandpa born" The answer was always "Berlin".

Richard, Ernest & Herman were brothers, my uncles.  My father was Otto.

The other Kobersteins you mention are probably Ernst's brothers and sisters."

Koberstein.  I'm stymied.  If I find out anything additional I will let you know... Mary Alice Koberstein  PS Henry also lived in Adams Co. NE.

NOTE: The information on Ernst's children is positively true as I personally knew or know them all with the exception of Richard, he died the year that I was born.

E-mail from Mary Alice Gibson dated 1/22/99:
Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein's second wife was Paulina Antonia HOFFMAN.  I noticed that Louis or Ludwig Koberstein also married a HOFFMAN (Caroline) Do you suppose the Kobersteins and the Hoffmans were neighbors in Germany?

The family story was that Ernst's first wife (name unknown) died and left him with 3 young children.  He sent back to Germany for a second wife. His mother Minnie Fricka came to the USA and brought Paulina Hoffman with her.  I don't know if this is true or not.  I got the information from one of his daughters (one of my elderly Aunts) Ernst and Paulina were married in either McLean or Livingston County, Ill in 1884. My Aunt said that his first wife died in Germany, but it doesn't seem likely to me that a man would undertake a voyage of
that magnitude with 3 young children and not a wife to assist him. Possibly Wife #1 died on the ship or shortly after arriving in USA. He arrived in Baltimore in May,1880.  Paulina arrived in Baltimore in November, 1880.  However they weren't married until 1884. So who knows?  I'm sure this kind of information is useless but I find it interesting!...Mary Alice

My grandfather, Ernst Wilhelm koberstein & his son-in-law, Gus Schilling built a brick making kiln near Shaniko, Wasco County, OR and laid the brick for the Shaniko Hotel probably between 1909 and 1915,. I would appreciate any information on them or the hotel. Is it still standing? If so could someone send me a photo? I would be happy to reinburse any expenses incurred. Anything would be welcome! Thank you, Mary Gibson in Nebraska

Yes, Mary the Shaniko Hotel is still standing. Area residents enjoy the history of this old town that was once considered "the wool capital of the world" with cattle, wool and wheat being shipped out of the depot by the train load. In 1904 the total value of wool sold was $5 million dollars. Prosperity was not to last. The Dalles-California Highway  bypassed Shaniko in 1925, railroad passenger service ended in 1936 and with regular freight service ending in 1942, Shaniko was doomed. By 1959 it was a bonafide ghost town and the existing buildings were allowed to deteriorate. We're happy to say, although not a thriving community, Shaniko once again has a few permanent residents. They have restored part of the old town and especially the hotel back to its early glory. Once a year local residents and area ranchers come together to celebrate and recreate Shanikos earlier years. "Shaniko Days" is held the first weekend in August. I believe the hotel, which is beautifully restored, is now a bed and breakfast. I know we have a picture of the hotel around here someplace, if you will send us your address we will be happy to send it to you. The hotels phone number is 1-541-489-3441 if you are interested in finding out more information and
perhaps sharing yours.

Best Wishes, Rod and Ruth Bourland
