I have ordered the original papers to see if there is more 2 CONC information.  Based on death record for Ida Koberstein of Morton county, 2 CONC it is probable that she and Carl Koberstien are children of August 2 CONC Koberstein and wife nee Hartman.  They must have lived in Hebron, Morton 2 CONC county, but the nearest hospital and place to register naturalization was 2 CONC across the river in Bismark, Burleigh county, North Dakota. 2 CONT 2 CONT E-mail from Wayne Koberstein dated June 2, 1999. 2 CONT 2 CONT Enjoy your Koberstein site. It was understood in his admission that he should 2 CONC make himself useful in such light work on the premises as would not 2 CONC interfere with his studies, and the makng of garden incident to the 2 CONC appraoch of spring was one fo the things in which he was to assist. He 2 CONC is not very energetic, however, and is no friend of work, so he 2 CONC determined to leave the place and induced the younger boys to join him in 2 CONC the idea. 2 CONT Koberstein and Reichle went toward Portland, Joseph George wen to Albany 2 CONC and Craven started across the country toward his home in Tillamook 2 CONC county. He has relatives in Polk county and will probably call on them 2 CONC on the way, and if so they will likely advise him to return. Her father died in 1884, and in 1889, she moved 2 CONC to the United States with her mother and family settling in North Dakota. 2 CONC When she was 16, the family moved to Philomath, OR, where she was 2 CONC married to August Gustave Koberstein in Dec. 25, 1896. In 1897, the 2 CONC coupled moved to Hebron where they took up a homestead and remained for 2 CONC 40 years. In 1937 they returned to Oregon settling in Corvallis. Mr 2 CONC Koberstein died in 1957. He was 86.  Koberstein was 2 CONC born Aug. 14, 1916, in Bismarck, N.D., to Gustave and Christine Hart 2 CONC Koberstein.  He married Louise Allen in Eugene on March 7, 1942. She died 2 CONC Sept. 22, 2002.  He grew up in Hebron, N.D., and moved to this area in 2 CONC 1939. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  He owned 2 CONC Custom Television Repair and continued to operate it until three weeks 2 CONC ago.  He enjoyed music from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, writing music and 2 CONC playing the ukulele. He also enjoyed writing poetry, and trailer camping 2 CONC trips.  Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Anne of Portland and 2 CONC Marilyn Parra of Eugene; a son, Allan of Salem; eight grandchildren; and 2 CONC three great-grandchildren.  Thursday's service will be held at 2 p.m. at 2 CONC 1065 River Road in Eugene. For five years, he started in center field for 2 CONC the Corvallis Elks American Legion baseball team, and some believe he was 2 CONC one of the finest pure athletes of the time. In the Junior Olympics, he 2 CONC set a national record and won the softball throw in 1957 (296 feet, 4½ 2 CONC inches). 2 CONT Following his graduation, he joined the National Guard from 1962 to 1968, 2 CONC earning the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). Then he worked a variety of 2 CONC mill and landscaping jobs throughout the area, retiring from Corvallis 2 CONC Disposal and Corvallis School District employment. He founded Useful Box 2 CONC Company, featuring dovetailed boxes that he designed and built to order. 2 CONT He had a highly developed work ethic, enjoyed hard work, and had a 2 CONC reputation for quality workmanship, besides being a fantastic cook. Some 2 CONC family favorites were fried chicken, anything barbecued, smoked fish, 2 CONC chicken and noodles, seafood chowder, and wild game. 2 CONT He wed Jeanne Cox in 1965, and Todd Roger Koberstein was born in 1967. 2 CONC Bill and Jeanne later divorced. Bill married Linda Anderson on Feb. 14, 2 CONC 1969, and Natalie Christine Koberstein was born in 1972. Bill was a 2 CONC humble man of integrity and dignity who loved and cherished Linda, their 2 CONC children, grandchildren, many friends, and his large extended family, for 2 CONC whom he always "had their back." 2 CONT Bill considered his own walk of faith to feature the Serenity Prayer, 2 CONC being a friend, a life of simplicity, and serving others in his own quiet 2 CONC way through yard work, home maintenance, and gifts of garden produce that 2 CONC he offered to friends, family and the community. He honored God's 2 CONC creation through his love of the outdoors, and was at peace in nature. 2 CONT Bill enjoyed taking Linda and their children on many fun camping and 2 CONC fishing adventures. 2 CONT He was an avid fisherman and bird hunter, and exceptional camp cook. For 2 CONC 44 seasons, Bill joined a group of friends on "The Owyhee" (Oregon) for 2 CONC chukar hunting, with his son, Todd, joining them at age 11 (for 33 2 CONC seasons). 2 CONT Besides the hunting, he enjoyed the quiet moments around the campfire, 2 CONC watching the sunrise with a cup of fresh "camp" coffee, and the sunsets 2 CONC at the end of the day with the fellowship of friends, while fully 2 CONC expressing his wry sense of humor. 2 CONT Bill was a skilled gardener. His yard was regularly complimented for its 2 CONC cleanliness and order, a pristine garden abundant with produce and 2 CONC beautiful flowers (his favorites were begonias, lupine, columbine and 2 CONC sweet peas). He mowed his acre of lawn with a smile, and valued keeping 2 CONC his yard and home immaculate. Many remember him from his place on the 2 CONC front porch, greeting visitors with a smile, good humor and quiet 2 CONC considerations. 2 CONT He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick "Fritz" (1956); beloved 2 CONC granddaughter Elizabeth Grace Unangst (2009); and stepfather, Vern 2 CONC Francis (1985). I heard a click from a rock landing on the 2 CONC gravel road separating our homes. Seeing no one I continued surveying our 2 CONC property line and heard it again, this time catching sight of a white 2 CONC t-shirt as it disappeared behind a tree. I picked up a rock and returned 2 CONC fire. These first contests resulted in few "hits" but lots of verbal 2 CONC exchanges, sometimes howls of pain. As our distance and aim improved, the 2 CONC mothers decided that something was to be done to save the wear and tear 2 CONC on lawn mowers, to say nothing about the lovely bay windows of the homes 2 CONC on both sides of the street ("A" Street). We learned to play I am sure at 2 CONC our mothers' "urging" so these contests only emerged when battles with 2 CONC other neighborhoods evolved. But we played many childhood games all day 2 CONC and into the night: Hide-and-Seek, Kick-the-Can, Army, Cowboys, and 2 CONC Police (All derived from basic Hide-and-Seek). As new children moved into 2 CONC the neighborhood and we got older, the games transitioned to sports, 2 CONC baseball in the spring, basketball in winter, and football in the fall. 2 CONC There was no deviation from this schedule. We explored the neighborhood 2 CONC and included the Oregon State College campus as our territory. We always 2 CONC played basketball in a gym and found entrance from the front door which, 2 CONC if locked and there was no legitimate party to follow stealthily behind, 2 CONC was attained through a deliberate and circuitous exploration of possible 2 CONC access points. We rarely failed but when interrupted by a custodian - 2 CONC once by Dean Leman himself - we simply assumed that these men in 2 CONC "temporary authority" really just wanted us to do (whatever they had 2 CONC caught us doing) at a time when they were not there. We complied readily. 2 CONC The tracks between Corvallis and Philomath were our "hunting grounds", 2 CONC available for all kinds of youthful explorations and outdoor activities. 2 CONC I suspect it is no accident that Bill and Linda live near what we called 2 CONC "Old Baldy". Bill was a remarkable athlete among a high school class with 2 CONC a number with athletic talent. Growing up there was literally nothing he 2 CONC could not do that involved gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination. 2 CONC Then he was thought of as an "early maturer" but today he is more likely 2 CONC to be considered a kinesthetic genius. He won a national championship in 2 CONC the softball throw at 12 (just short of the length of a football field), 2 CONC and beat out a high school senior to start in center field as an 8th 2 CONC grader on the Legion baseball team. There was some attempt to work with 2 CONC him as a decathlon athlete, but there was no real coaching, facilities or 2 CONC resources for it. However, if you see pictures of Jim Thorpe, you will 2 CONC see a duplicate of Bill Koberstein. In the words of Dizzy Dean (who was 2 CONC talking about Hall of Fame pitchers), Bill "may not be the greatest 2 CONC athlete to come out of (Corvallis High School ), but he was amongst 'em 2 CONC pahdner, I gar-on-tee you that", (he) was amongst 'em. And let us not 2 CONC forget the legendary Panther little league baseball team that went 2 CONC undefeated with Bill as the ace pitcher. He threw "heat", not always on 2 CONC target but it was plenty fast, and we were undefeated that summer. Bill 2 CONC played football and baseball for CHS and the Corvallis Elks American 2 CONC Legion Team. Primarily his often injured "thorough bred ankles" likely 2 CONC prevented him from going much further as an athlete. However, he was a 2 CONC fierce competitor who challenge the limits of himself and his teammates. 2 CONC One story has it that in the first year of the playing fence for Taylor 2 CONC Field, Bill jumped over the fence and threw out the unsuspecting runner 2 CONC as he loped into second base believing he had a ground rule double, and 2 CONC would just be awarded second base - not to Bill, he completed the play as 2 CONC we trained on the practice field. On another day, he threw the ball all 2 CONC the way over the backstop from deep center field during warm-ups. He said 2 CONC it was an accident, that he was just excited, but I think he was 2 CONC delivering a message to the Sweet Home baseball team should they get on 2 CONC first base. He worked hard all his life whether for Corvallis Disposal or 2 CONC Corvallis School District, and he did more by far than was expected. One 2 CONC report indicates that when Bill was replaced at Corvallis Disposal, it 2 CONC took two workers to complete his routes, and I suspect they were 2 CONC stretched. Also, the quality of his work was exemplary. This is clear for 2 CONC anyone who owns one of his "Useful Boxes", a part-time business he 2 CONC started. Further, those who goes by his home between Corvallis and 2 CONC Philomath always remark on how beautiful and well-kept the lawn looks. As 2 CONC he put it, he just liked "things in place", and looking clean and fresh, 2 CONC I might add. He took a run at Serenity Lane as a young adult, and 2 CONC attended meetings regularly and sponsored others often throughout his 2 CONC adulthood. I noticed the difference in Bill rather quickly. To be brief, 2 CONC it seems to have taught him the depth and meaning of life, his own and 2 CONC for others too. It contributed to making him the quality family man he 2 CONC was, and to value the caring part of the man he always was. There are 2 CONC many in the community whom Bill volunteered, maintaining their yard and 2 CONC cleaning their homes as they recovered from the death of a loved one or 2 CONC an illness. He engaged his extended family in this way as well, to be 2 CONC brief, he had their back. He did it quietly and without fanfare, and I 2 CONC only know of this part of his life as it slips out in conversation. There 2 CONC is more, many stories of our shared experience and they are available on 2 CONC request. There are several work, fishing and hunting stories that fill 2 CONC out his life, others know more of this then I. This brief note will have 2 CONC to do about how I know Bill Koberstein. In this world, I believe we are 2 CONC directed to leave our place in life as we found it so others have a 2 CONC similar opportunity as we had. He was 86.  Koberstein was 2 CONC born Aug. 14, 1916, in Bismarck, N.D., to Gustave and Christine Hart 2 CONC Koberstein.  He married Louise Allen in Eugene on March 7, 1942. She died 2 CONC Sept. 22, 2002.  He grew up in Hebron, N.D., and moved to this area in 2 CONC 1939. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  He owned 2 CONC Custom Television Repair and continued to operate it until three weeks 2 CONC ago.  He enjoyed music from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, writing music and 2 CONC playing the ukulele. He also enjoyed writing poetry, and trailer camping 2 CONC trips.  Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Anne of Portland and 2 CONC Marilyn Parra of Eugene; a son, Allan of Salem; eight grandchildren; and 2 CONC three great-grandchildren.  Thursday's service will be held at 2 p.m. at 2 CONC 1065 River Road in Eugene.
