Decendants of August Gustav KOBERSTEIN Senior

Notes

3. Gustav August KOBERSTEIN Junior

E-mail dated June 30, 1999 from Wayne Koberstein:
August was my grandfather. Carl and Ida were their children, the first of 12.  The name August and Gustave appear often in my family. August is my father's name, as it was my great uncle's, a Koberstein who with his brother Ernst had all kinds of adventures on the West Coast as young men in the late 1800s. They worked on schooners and canneries from San Francisco to Alaska, as well as with mule teams on mining wagons near Shanico in Eastern Oregon. "Uncle August" was a
deaf-mute, a snappy dresser with great appeal to the ladies, according to my dad. Ernst was a grizzled old character when I knew him as a kid in Corvallis.  He owned a house near the OSU campus and refused to sell to the university for years until he died, when I was about 13.

I could see Wisconsin and Oregon appealing to Germans, but the appeal of North Dakota was apparently free land for my grandparents, then just a young married couple. They left their parents and families behind in the lush hills of Oregon to settle on the midwestern sod. It was great life while it lasted; my dad has never stopped talking about his childhood on the farm. But dust and the depression brought it all to an end and drove the entire family back to Oregon.  There they found work and a stable life in town. (My mother had a similar
experience with her Norwegian family from South Dakota.) Years later, in the 70s, my parents could not understand why I wanted to move back to the country, which they associated with the hard life they had escaped.

I'll send more info as time allows. Hope this helps match up more pieces of the Koberstein puzzle. Thanks.

Osborne, Marie C. (Koberstein)                     (1909)        24 Jan 1993

This seems to match this Mary Koberstein in terms of birth year and being the Germans from Russia Heritage Society is located in Bismark, North Dakota and this entry could logically be from North Dakota.  I found these death records for a Marie C. Osborn in Benton County, Oregon which is the county this family line ended up in.

Another Sucessfull Term at an End...
The school for deaf-mutes, under the patronage of the state, and directlye under the control of a board of regents, closed a avery successful school year yesterday.  At 10 o'clock yesterday morning the scholars rendered a very creditable programme in the sign language.  Their performances reflected great credit upon the institution and the teachers of the school.  There were thirty-six scholars as follow:  ...; August Koberstein, ...

Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) 25 Feb 1896 Tue Page 5
Four runaway deaf mutes.
A big boy afraid of work entices three others to go - ...
Supintendent Early of the Mute school took the afternoon train north yesterday with the expectation of bringing back two of four truants who ran away from the institution Sunday and Sunday night.  The names of the runaways are August Koberstein, age 21 years, resident of Philomath, Benton county; Joseph George aged 17 years, from Albina: John Reichle, aged 16 years, from Stafford, Clackamas county: Jesse Craven, aged 15 years, from Oretown, Tilliamook county.
The last three were coaxed to leave the school by Koberstein, who was admitted by special arrangement of the state board of education so as to give the young man a better chance for an education even though he had reached his majority.  It was understood in his admission that he should make himself useful in such light work on the premises as would not interfere with his studies, and the makng of garden incident to the appraoch of spring was one fo the things in which he was to assist.  He is not very energetic, however, and is no friend of work, so he determined to leave the place and induced the younger boys to join him in the idea.
Koberstein and Reichle went toward Portland, Joseph George wen to Albany and Craven started across the country toward his home in Tillamook county.  He has relatives in Polk county and will probably call on them on the way, and if so they will likely advise him to return.  Mr. early will probably be back today with the two who went to Portland and the other one will not stay away very long.  They are not bad boys and tere was no trouble or dissatisfaction at the school, but young Koberstein simply did not want to work and his influence spread to the other three boys.

Note from the age of 21 years old a birth year of about 1865 is calculated which identifies this August as  August Hermann Koberstein.

24. Daniel KOBERSTEIN

Original information gave birth as about 1903, but the new information with the birth date of 28 May 1912 from the Golden Gate National Cemetery CA fits and burial at San Francisco is consistant with his father having died in Sacramento, CA. which is not far away.  If his son died while they were in Sacramento military burial in San Francisco is resonable.
