Roughing it in Afghanistan, 01 June 2004, www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/ The job of rebuilding and safeguarding Afghanistan may be off the front pages, but men and women from New Zealand's Defence Force are playing an important role in a difficult, war-battered country. Hank Schouten reports. NAVY Lieutenant Commander Tania Koberstein, provincial reconstruction team engineering officer and aid programme manager, says it is rewarding to see the results of projects like rebuilding Bamian University. The university, set up to provide teacher and agricultural training, got mainly United States funding, but NZ Aid provided furniture and other resources and pays staff salaries. Lieutenant Commander Koberstein works with US and British government aid agencies on selecting and funding projects. "We all work together in the development group of the provincial reconstruction team, where we focus our combined resources on the huge task of rebuilding such a devastated country." The university was one project and "seeing how excited and enthusiastic the students are to be given the chance to learn makes you realise how lucky we are in New Zealand". Another project is to support Save the Women and Children of Afghanistan, a non- government agency set up to restore the rights of women. This involves training 50 women in women's and children's rights, human rights and the new national constitution. These women will go out and teach a further 4000 people. "Recently we visited a class and presented all the students with radios, which is a hugely important resource, especially for the local women to keep up to date with current events in Bamian." Lieutenant Commander Koberstein, 28, said much had changed for women.
