Kenny Koberstein, assistant director of football operations

South Eugene football had its first winning season in 13 years last fall. It’ll now be up to Kenny Koberstein to build on that success.

Koberstein, 33, was named coach of the Axe on Friday, taking over for Kevin Leonard who resigned in December after five seasons on the job.

Koberstein was offensive coordinator at Harrisburg the last two seasons after previously serving in a similar role at South Albany and McKay. He was also the head coach at Myrtle Point in 2011.

A Molalla High graduate, Koberstein played football collegiately at Western Oregon.

“We’re very excited,” Koberstein said. “I think there’s a lot of potential in that community right now.”

The Axe went 5-4 last season to record their first winning record since 2006 and their first nonlosing season since going 4-4 in 2009.

Before last season, South Eugene was in the middle of an eight-year stretch where it went 9-66.

“Kevin did a super job last year getting us to move forward and get us a chance for the playoffs at the end,” South Eugene athletic director Dave Hancock said. “We were right there.”

It was also their first season in the Class 5A Midwestern League after a new OSAA rule allowed teams to drop down a classification for football.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Last week, NCAA President Mark Emmert said he didn't envision college sports, including football, happening in the fall if students aren't on campus. "It certainly seems like if we are not back in the classroom in the fall then things are going to be a lot different," South Eugene head football coach Kenny Koberstein said.Coaches and athletic directors said the thought of playing without fans is questionable. "If it isn't safe for fans, how is it safe for our kids?" Koberstein said. South Eugene High School athletic director Dave Hancock said a stronger virtual presence is needed if fans can't attend games. "We could stream our games on the NFHS Network," Hancock said. "Parents could watch a live stream." Hancock also said the idea of moving fall sports into the winter or spring wouldn't be a possibility given the amount of crossover athletes from sport to sport. "We have the ongoing battle as it is for certain athletes that might do a club volleyball during basketball season or a club basketball season during volleyball season," Hancock said. "That doesn't work out real well." Some athletes said if they are cleared to play, they will, even without fans. "It would be weird without fans but I'd sacrifice that to play at little bit more," Sheldon football junior Riley Edgar said.

North Marion Middle School's new assistant principal, Lindsay Androy-Koberstein, did not go into the field of education to follow in her parents' footsteps. In fact, she got into teaching because her parents advised her to find her own path.
