"Food applications of carrageenan in ready-to-eat dairy desserts in Europe, in water-gel desserts in Asia, and in meat and poultry in the US are the highest growth segments by region' says Jack Koberstine, senior vice president of business management at CP Kelco. Major uses for carrageenan outside of food include pet food and oral care.

"We have and continue to upgrade our plant in the Philippines to give us more flexibility in the grades we produce, both the PES grades (semirefined, extracted), as well as the higher-end specialty grades," says Mr. Koberstine. "In Denmark, we use alcohol precipitation technology and in Cebu we produce PES and refined grades using gel pressed technology." CP Kelco also produces refined carrageenan at its facility in Lille Skensved, Denmark.

Producers have different views on consolidation, yet the present market alignment seems to act as a buffer against immediate buyouts. "It probably would be fair to say that over time there will be a little more consolidation," says Mr. Butz. "Given the size of our business, we certainly are not looking at participating in further industry consolidation," says Mr. Koberstine

Sensient Technologies has moved ahead dramatically in the ink jet ink industry, where it first made its mark by being the primary supplier to a color ink jet printing leader, and the company is branching out into other areas.

In a key move, Sensient acquired Kimberly-Clark Printing Technology, an Escondido, Calif.-based manufacturer of specialty inks for ink jet and industrial applications, in November 2001. The company, a wholly owned Kimberly-Clark subsidiary with revenues of approximately $20 million last year, markets products under the Formulabs brand.
