When the earth trembled near Tacoma, Washington, during the Nisqually earthquake in winter 2001, the city escaped nearly unscathed. But one tiny neighborhood took a hard hit--literally.

A hillside of mud, trees, rocks, and debris crashed into a row of homes at Salmon Beach on the north side of the city. In fact, the landslide pushed one of the homes into Puget Sound and rendered another uninhabitable.
