Police on wild goat chase By Tori Rosin - Daily Register Portage Police officers spent about hours Thursday afternoon trying to take an unusual opponent into custody after a two-day chase. Police waited at Silver Lake Cemetery for the Columbia County Humane Society to apprehend the adult male billy goat, Lt. Tom Moore said. However, while the volunteer was at one end of the cemetery trying to rope the goat, the goat was running out of the cemetery, across Highway O and into a nearby field. Moore described the goat as having long black hair and horns. "He's not going out and looking for trouble," he said, saying the goat didn't try to headbutt or charge officers. "You can get fairly close to him and then he'll run away." But in the end, it was three Trans Works Transmissions employees who got the goat in the middle of Highway CX. Ben Koberstein said the office was celebrating a co-worker's last night when an unmarked black Chevy truck with police lights drove in the back driveway of the business. "We all thought there were some bank robbers or something that were going to drive into the back of the business," Koberstein said. When they saw the goat, Koberstein, his brother Paul and another co-worker asked if they could help. Law enforcement and Columbia County Humane Society officials said they could, so they took off running in the direction of the goat. They didn't have to sprint very far. Koberstein caught the goat in front of Gunderson's Construction Company about 7:50 p.m., Moore said. "I grabbed his tail and he went 'Baaaahhh," Koberstein said. "I mean, it's been loose for a couple of days and is tired and wants some food. It was pretty funny." The Columbia County Humane Society now has the animal in its custody.
