14th Century

Our knowledge of this family in the 14th century is a continuation of the Kobern family. Here is the FamilySearch list again:

5. They had a daugher named Agnes Von Cobern (1400-1461) who married Hans Von Eltz (1399-1480).

The word Ritter means Knight in German, so clearly they were of the Tutonic order of Knights. This order was a small voluntary and mercenary military membership, serving as a crusading military order for protection of Christians mainly in the Baltics during the Middle Ages.

1189 CE - 1192 CE - The Third Crusade is formed with the aim of recapturing Jerusalem for Christendom. Although some cities were recaptured, Jerusalem was not one of them.
c. 1190 CE - Teutonic knights establish a field hospital at Acre during the Third Crusade.
May 1198 CE - The Order of Teutonic Knights is officially sanctioned by Pope Innocent III.
1242 CE - An army of Teutonic knights is defeated by the Russians at Lake Peipus.
1244 CE - The Teutonic Order adopts a white surcoat and black cross insignia for all knights.
1244 CE - At the battle of La Forbie near Gaza against an Ayyubid army, a devastating 437 of 440 Teutonic knights are killed.
1271 CE - The Mamluks of Egypt and Syria capture Montfort fortress, headquarters of the Teutonic Order.
1291 CE - The Mamluks of Egypt and Syria capture Acre, the headquarters of the Teutonic Order.
1291 CE - 1309 CE - Venice is the headquarters of the Teutonic Order.
1308 CE - The Teutonic Order acquires Danzig and eastern Pomerania.
1309 CE - The headquarters of the Teutonic Order is moved to a fortified convent at Marienburg in Prussia.
1346 CE - The Teutonic Order acquires control of northern Estonia.
15 Jul 1410 CE - At the battle of Tannenburg an army of Teutonic knights is wiped out.
1457 CE - The headquarters of the Teutonic Order is relocated to Konigsberg.
1525 CE - The Teutonic Order is secularized in Prussia.
1562 CE - The Teutonic Order is secularized in Livonia.

Johann Rumlian Von Covern has this picture. The events of his life recorded below indicat him to be the Ritter (Knight) kurtrierscher Rat Johann Romilian Von Cobern (1375-1420) married to Agnes Von Langenau (1361-1438).

• Received and read on three specific days of the week.
• Then the letters on the back with instructions were handed over to the notaries for processing. Their copies were read again and, in the case of approval, provisionally sealed by one of the two Großhofrichter with his private seal. In the seal office the letter was endowed with the imperial seal. When handing over the documents to the addressee, he had to swear that he had not committed any bribery.
