Surname: Vichar, Massey, Koberstein, Silver, Burton, Vuicher, Belz, Green, Wichar

VICHAR, John of New Westminster, passed away peacefully in his 85th year at the Royal Columbian Hospital on Sunday, February 6, 2000 after a brief illness. John was born in Tiny, Saskatchewan on June 17, 1915 and was one of 15 children born to his mother and father. John's life is an example to all caring and responsible people, and especially those who were touched by his gentle and caring nature. He devoted his life to caring for his family, his friends, and the many animals who were part of his world. His life's credo can be summed up by the words of Elizabeth Goudge who wrote: "Nothing living should ever be treated with contempt. Whatever it is that lives, a person, a tree, or a bird, should be touched gently, because the time is short.  Civilization is another word for respect for Life." John is survived by his daughter Sadie Massey of Birch Bay; his granddaughters Linda Koberstein of Coquitlam and Tracy Silver of Birch Bay; his great-grandson JB Burton of Birch Bay; his sisters Lena Vuicher of Toronto and Midge Belz of California; his nephews Bob Belz, Ronnie Viucher and Bob Green; his nieces Elenor Shuila and Leona Wicher, and his loyal and devoted friends. Services will be held on Monday, February 14, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Parish located at 7455 10th Avenue, Burnaby, followed by interment in St. Peters cemetery in New Westminster. Remembrance may be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation in John's memory. Columbia-Bowell 521-4881.

Phillip Sidney Herring was born in Castor, Alberta on November 9, 1919. Phil passed away peacefully June 8, 2007, at Burnaby Hospital, age 87, surrounded by his loving family. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion, his children, Alan (Colleen), Jane Koberstein (Bill), Ross (Betsy), Ian (Diana) and his grandchildren Mark, Elizabeth, Sonya, Eva, Laura, Sarah and Liam. His early life was typical of prairie hardships, traveling across open flatlands by horse to attend the one-room Netherby School during the harsh and dusty depression. He made extra money by hunting badgers and gophers. At age 17 he graduated from Hanna High School and moved to the west coast to attend UBC. At the train platform, he asked his father what he should study, and the reply was simply, "engineering". World War II interrupted Phillip's engineering studies. He enlisted in 1939, serving as Lieutenant, with the 6th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, in North Africa and Italy. His job as a reconnaissance officer was to go ahead of the Allied troops to plan their advance. December 1943, he was one of the first Canadians to enter the town of Ortona, Italy to assess the route - after which the Allied forces entered. Defended by elite German paratroopers, the Canadians were subjected to a fierce battle in which 1,374 of his colleagues died. After the war he graduated from UBC in Civil Engineering, class of 1947. His career in municipal engineering began in Ocean Falls, BC. In 1952, with his wife, and their first 2 children, he moved to Kamloops to become their City Engineer. Five years later, they moved to Burnaby where he settled down to raise his growing family. He retired in 1984, after 28 years as Assistant City Engineer for Vancouver. Phil will be remembered as the consummate, practical-minded engineer. Phil was an avid rock hound, world traveler, gardener, award-winning wine maker and a long time member of the Burnaby Lapidary Club and the South Burnaby Garden Club. He had a particularly deep passion for his property in Point Roberts, which has been in the family for 95 years. Family meant everything to him. He will be missed. The family wishes to thank Burnaby Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Veterans Affairs and Fraser Health Authority for their care and support. Donations can be made to the Last Post Fund BC Branch, Surrey, BC (604) 572-3242.
